Music Video Analysis using Goodwin's Theory

I have chosen to analyse 4 different music videos from a mixture of genres, such as Pop, Rock, Hip Hop and Indie Rock. I will be using Andrew Goodwin's theory to analyse these videos. Goodwin identified 5 aspects of music videos that we as the audience should look out for when watching music videos, which are Thought Beats, Narrative and Performance, Star Image, Relation of Visuals to Song and Technical aspects of Music Video. The reason why I am going to analyse three different music videos is due to the fact I have watched the videos before and I would say they are not very structured to their genre, the way the video is done is more open and the ideas can be changed to something towards my genre.

The pop song I will be analysing is Miley Cyrus-Malibu, I have chosen this song because I do want to take some ideas from this video into my own video. The rock song is Bring Me The Horizon-Sleepwalking, this is because I have found a students music video to this song and by comparing it to the real video and working from both of them will help me. The hip hop song is Kendrick Lamar-Humble as it is one of my favourite music videos out right now, the video has many ideas I would like to use as the shots are so powerful they make me enjoy the music more. The indie rock song is The Neighbourhoor- Sweater Weather as it is one of my choices to create my music video, the song does already have a music video however because I do not particulary think that it is strong myself I want to analyse it myself and see how I would have done it.

Pop, Miley Cyrus-Malibu

By listening to the song you can tell that it is telling you the story of her trip to Malibu with someone special. Miley Cyrus has a very memorable voice especially to people my age as I have grew up around her on Disney Channel playing as Hannah Montana, her music style has changed many times throughout the years and I think that she has finally discovered herself, her voice in this song sounds very relaxed and happy which makes it enjoyable for us to listen to. I believe that this song is directed to the person she went to Malibu with as it sounds like a very strong memory for her, perhaps it could be why she has gone back down to her country routes as she sounds grateful. The song itself is quite slow, the beats are a mix, there seems to be 2 different beats overlaid with one faster than the other which keeps the song positive and not too slow. Because I would say I am a fan of Miley Cyrus' music from the age of 8 to even now ten years later I would say that I have understood the meaning of the song from the lyrics as in the media Miley has admitted she is going back to her old routes. In 2013 her song "Wrecking ball" was released which the world saw a different side to her, her look changed and her music changed, she was going through a rough time after her break up, now that she has calmed down from her "Bangerz" phase she stopped taking drugs and ending up getting back together with her boyfriend, which is who I am assuming took her to Malibu and made her realise that she needs to go back to doing what she loves which is country/pop music. The music video to Malibu matches the song perfectly in my opinion, it shows her old style, the location works well, the props and costume do also work great as there is a lot of vibrant props and the location also looks very pretty which makes everything look very positive, her costumes are also white whatever the outfit change which indicates purity which I think is great as it makes her stand out from the bright tones around her. The song is a balance of slow and fast beats therefore some shots and shown for a longer period of time, for example the artist is shown for a longer time compared to shots of the scenery. I do like how the video shows different times of the day, there is natural lighting used which makes the vibes of the video. My favourite thing about the video is the overlaying edits with the balloons as it is something I want to do myself on my own music video. A lot of the shots look hand held which makes it look more personal.

Rock, Bring Me The Horizon-Sleepwalking
The beginning of the music starts off quite eerie and due to the video showing a girl looking lost in quite a loose frame, indicates to me that the song is about being lost and not knowing where to go and feeling like you are sleepwalking. There is only one lead singer in the band which has a very strong and slightly raspy voice, it may sound to some people he is screaming however due to the loudness and the raspy side to his voice it could be mistaken. There is a calm part towards the end which shows each shot very slowly which even makes the band look very tired, the shots are also even more muted and matte looking compared to the majority of the music video. The idea of placing the band in a care home could mean that the girl in the beginning is in the care home so showing the past and future perhaps and still feeling lost after so many years. I absolutely adore the shots in the outside locations, especially at the beach with the reverse shot of the waves as it looks so peaceful and the matte look makes it looks very delicate.  Looking at the lyrics it sounds like the narrative is about someone who is struggling and not wanting to be around anymore, however the actual video looks more lost than wanting to leave to me personally. So due to the lyrics and narrative not matching completely to the point I understand the meaning makes me watch the video more trying to link everything together which is clearly making it more popular. The costumes for the girl are always very simple, usually monochrome tones which shows simplicity and perhaps it could mean she is losing herself as a person or not know who she is. The look of the band matches exactly what I would expect, I pictured the lead singer with dark clothing and no bright colours in his costume, tattoos and piercings and for them to be pale with dark hair. So he clearly is exactly what I pictured, and so is the girl actually as she looks very pure so I could not picture her in any other colours. The other band members I was not too sure about their look but I did have a feeling they would have a more relaxed look to them and not have a specific look to them, as in the video they are wearing simple black and white costumes. I would say the lyrics and music video match with the different shots, as the video is slightly softer than the lyrics however there is a beat throughout the song that is played at the beginning which does match the narrative as it has that cold, eerie vibe to it. I do like how the filter is used in the beginning of the video as it is completely different to the rest of the video, it is the only thing with a bright colour which is red, it is used in the middle too, so that indicates danger in the video, the rest of the video is matte and very muted in colour which gives off a sleepwalking look as it is not clear but clear enough for us to see still. There is a part towards the end where it looks as if the lead singer is looking at the girl due to the camera shots have been edited together and the lyrics screaming "Wake up" and then a shot of her looking perhaps at him with the way this is edited shows that she is trapped. The ending of the video matches the song perfectly as she wakes up in bed and holds onto her neck and with the lyrics talking about breathing it brings it all together. I would say this video has lot more shots and better edits compared to Miley Cyrus-Malibu but you can tell that that is due to the genre.

Hip Hop, Kendrick Lamar-Humble
There is only one artist, Kendrick has a very memorable voice in my opinion, due to him facing towards the camera the majority of the time in the video it looks like he is addressing us and not the people in the video, which involves us more and keeps our attention on him. The lyrics do have associations with God, even with the video shows a look similar to the last supper too. It also shows how he has changed and how he grew up with being very poor to where he is now, which then on the video it does show what he has now. Again in the video it shows Kendrick wearing a priest costume which links again with the lyrics and the following shot which I have mentioned of the last supper. Of course he has females in his video to stay in the hip hop genre, they are always by Lamar's side and supporting his fame. The shots that show like a fish eye lens with a global look shows how he is going through life, from one shot to another. The music video uses a wide range or shots and images to relate the video to the lyrics. There are scenes in the video showing his fame whilst the lyrics were talking about his past, which is clearly showing the change in his life, the scenes around the globe show different locations such as rough areas then holiday looking locations. The shot in a room full of men looking down with Kendrick singing then swapping to who sings next could mean that he felt like he was stuck in a box and did not stand out at one point when he was trying to start his career. Every time there was a beat change at the last supper scene the camera shakes which is in time to the beat. My favourite part of the video has to be about the Photoshop look for women, showing the two boxes showing the two sides of the woman and how he prefers how women look natural, the idea of the shape and the colours at this part of the video is what interests me the most into potentially doing something similar. Another favourite shot of the video is from 1.57 where the camera changes each time a new verse begins.

Indie Rock, The Neighbourhood-Sweater Weather

Star image is not shown clearly in my opinion in the video due to the fact that there were not many shots of the band members individual faces shown, I do like the idea of not having them as much in the video as I do feel like this song is not about the band but should be focused on the lyrics which is exactly what they did, I really liked the idea of them all being together the majority of the time that they were shown in the video as it shows that they are a band rather than having a member constantly on show hiding away the other members. I do love the sound of the band as the lead singer has a very calm voice that also has some quirkiness to it which is what makes it so unique, the band consider themselves as more rock than indie rock however in my opinion with how soft the voice is it does go into the indie rock genre more due to it also being quite soothing to listen to as it is so relaxing especially this song as the beats are typically slow. The lyrics have a deep meaning to them, this is due to the lyrics and video being based around California which is known as the land of dreams in which case people travel their to achieve their goals, however the speaker is not fond of the beaches but is there anyway, in which case has an opposite affect on him as he starts to lose himself there rather than finding himself. The lyrics also indicate that he wants to be able to share something with his loved one such as a house as it would bring them closer. In this music video there is no performance and is based around a narrative, it shows the band travelling in which we assume is California, we see them getting ready and driving, we also see quick snippets of the band members showing a lack of emotion and motivation, what i like about this video is the quick shots showing details of books such as the pages flickering and the shots of the lights this is due to them matching well with the beats. I also like the idea around the 3rd minute where there is overlayering happening with both shots being upside down as it shows that nothing is right and that it is not what they expected. The idea of having the music video black and white I believe works well with the lyrics as the song is very empty feeling due to the lack of happiness wehich is what i love about this song that it doesn't make me feel anything but relaxed. The video in my opinion has not been thought about too much which is what the aim would be I'm assuming due to the feeling the song gives the audience.
