Different types of Music Videos

There are different types of music videos, such as Narrative, Performance and Concept. Narrative These videos tend to just have a story that relates to the lyrics in some way, the videos also have no lip-synched singing. However some music videos like to not just be one type but mix up together, such as narrative and performance are typically put together, so it will keep swapping throughout the video showing the narrative then a bit of performing to show the artist in the video if they are not performing in the narrative. Narrative music videos tend to be fairly simple and easy to follow, however they can be quite predictable as they do match the lyrics typically, another negative is that narrative music videos can be very expensive to produce for record labels due to the locations needed may be far away and having to take all the equipment out on set. Myfavourite narrative based music videos is Taylor Swift's Look What You Made Me Do video, this is because there are so man...

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

In this blog post is a powerpoint explaining the theory and analysing a music video with Star, Todorov, Propp and more theories to show how it all works. **Last slide of the power point will not allow me to change the word "equilibrium" to disequilibrium when writing about what happens in the beginning of the Katy Perry music video. Demographics for Target Audience

Inside this post is a power point of an overall demographic for target audience for my chosen music genre, it includes my analyse of my target audience from the website YouGov which I have used before to get a basic idea of my target audience before creating my survey for my target audience, what I have also done is added in the presentation is my own survey which I created on Survey Monkey to see what my audience expects from me and what they enjoy about music videos in general before exploring more into indie music videos for my audience, which again I have analysed in my presentation and compared the YouGov results to my own. I posted my survey onto my social media asking if anyone could do my survey to help me gain some ideas for my music video. Create your own user feedback survey

Album Cover Practice

After analysing digipacks I decided to create my own versions of well known vinyl covers, I chose Nick Cave's "From Her To Eternity" and The Clash's "Combat Rock. I have taken my own photographs inspired by them and edited them similar, I chose these covers as they are both my style therefore I want to be able to make my digipack cover for Minor Crisis to still look like it fits in the indie rock genre but to also show my style. The top images are the real covers, (from the left we start off with Nick Cave's front cover with the following imagine across the top row is his back cover, the next image is off The Clash's front cover along with the final right image which is their back cover, underneath are my own versions of the covers with the same pattern). For Nick Cave's album I decided to change it slightly by having a different angle, I made my version less vampy and made it more warm, which is also why I changed the colour of the name as I decided ...

Digipak Analysis

A digipak is a CD case that is typically made out of card instead of the plastic case that jewel cases have, they have several folding panels in square shapes, with spines down the sides and plastic holders for the disc's inside. Many people also get these confused with jewel cases which are the regular plastic cases which have 2 outside covers and 2 inside covers, whilst digipacks are typically card with many different panels to open up. I have chosen 3 different digipaks to analyse, 2 within my chosen genre which is Indie and another one which is pop/indie/rock.  My first digipak is Twenty One Pilots-Blurry Face, I have chosen this as my out of genre digipak as although it is part of a different genre it has a similar style to my genre, the digipak itself to me does not look obvious to what genre it is due to the simplicity. My favourite part of the digipak is the colour scheme so that it is not distracting and to me looks like it focuses on the songs rather than the look o...

Intertextuality

In this blog post I have created some slides explaining what intertextuality is, what types there is of it and some examples to help understand each type better. Below I will also link in the videos to my examples of each type of intertextuality. Continuing Parody In Eminem's "We Made You" video he references Jessica Simpson in which case Youtuber Trisha Paytas plays Simpson in the music video, the lyrics "You're a rock star, baby" are referring to the rock star Elvis in which Eminem dresses similarly to in the video, he also parodies Brett Michaels from the TV show Rock of Love and the band Poison. He also mentions Kim Kardashian and Lindsey Lohan in the song which he again mocks. Whilst in "Without Me" the video shows Eminem and Dr. Dre as Batman and Robin-type heroes sent to save the world. Continuing Pastiche Taylor Swift's video and song lyrics both link to referring to the story of Romeo and Juliet, including referenc...

Narrative Theories

To be able to show examples of how these theories work I will be using Foo Fighters-Learn to Fly music video and Selena Gomez-Bad Liar. The reason why I have chosen both of these videos is due to the similarity of editing to them as they both contain a cloning edit type of look. Below are both music videos along with the definitions of the theories before analysing how both theories work within the music videos. Todorov's Theory Tzvetan Todorov's theory suggests that there are 3 different parts to a narrative, in which they begin with an equilibrium (normality), which follows onto something disturbing the equilibrium to then reaching a resolution to form equilibrium once again. Propp's Theory Vladmir Propp's theory suggests that each narrative has similar style within characters and their actions. He discovered that there are typically 7 recognisable characters in a narrative. The Hero- The character that seeks something. The Villain- The character that blo...

Indie Genre Conventions

The conventions of an indie genre for the music industry is very simple, the reason why I like the indie genre is because of the simple edge and different vibe they give off to the audience. Indie music videos are usually very focused on the artist/band, therefore the location is usually a normal place to make the band stand out more compared to the setting, for example a great location to film my music video would be perhaps a city, studio, tunnel, forest, or anything really easy to access, nothing too major as I have mentioned the focus needs to be on the band and the location should not over power them and take away the attention. Mise-en-scene for the genre is very important as the narrative for the music video needs to be portrayed well. The bands look needs to be very personal, for example in a band each member usually has a different look to them to make them stand out and be recognised easily, whilst if there is only one artist they should also have a very unique and memorab...

Indie History

This blog post contains a few slides about where indie music began, what indie music is, examples of indie bands, how it has changed over the years, etc.

Song Permission

I decided to ask Imagine Dragons for their permission using social media (my own twitter account), this is because I could not find on their website any contact information for their band as it was only to contact the team about any purchases being made. I have also decided that once my video is complete to write on my videos description on YouTube that I do not own the song and that it belongs to the band and their record label just in case they do not reply by the time I finish my video.

Making of Minor Crisis

To plan this I firstly decided what song I wanted to definitely use (top 3 songs I liked best are in my introductory post), after speaking to my friends and family for advice I decided to go for Imagine Dragon's "Amsterdam, this is because I had more ideas what to do with the music video for this song, I did want to go for The Neighbourhood's "Sweater Weather" however due to the song having it's own original music video it did start to get me into the habit of stealing too many ideas if I was to use that song which I did not want to fall into the trap of doing that. I decided to have a band as I wanted to have some instruments in the video as in the song you can specifically tell that there is a drum and guitar used, I liked the idea of having a trio therefore I thought by having two musicians and a lead singer the band would work well. For the band name I knew I either wanted some alliteration or an oxymoron, this is because I wanted a catchy/easy to remem...
