Intertextuality

In this blog post I have created some slides explaining what intertextuality is, what types there is of it and some examples to help understand each type better. Below I will also link in the videos to my examples of each type of intertextuality.

Continuing Parody
In Eminem's "We Made You" video he references Jessica Simpson in which case Youtuber Trisha Paytas plays Simpson in the music video, the lyrics "You're a rock star, baby" are referring to the rock star Elvis in which Eminem dresses similarly to in the video, he also parodies Brett Michaels from the TV show Rock of Love and the band Poison. He also mentions Kim Kardashian and Lindsey Lohan in the song which he again mocks. Whilst in "Without Me" the video shows Eminem and Dr. Dre as Batman and Robin-type heroes sent to save the world.


Continuing Pastiche
Taylor Swift's video and song lyrics both link to referring to the story of Romeo and Juliet, including references about the party where they both met, she also refers to sneaking out to see the lover just like Romeo and Juliet had to meet in secret.
Continuing Homage
Madonna see's Marilyn Monroe as an icon, which is why she copies her looks. Madonna has not copied her look once but various times, at events, videos and photoshoots copying her most well known looks. Below is a video comparing Marilyn and Madonna in their "Material Girl" and "Diamonds are a girls best friend".
